Service and Justice Outreach held its annual 5K Run For Justice this past Saturday at Crystal Lake Park. Not being much of a "runner" myself I decided to bite the bullet and give a little time and money for this cause. I suppose I didn't expect to enjoy the experience as much as I did.
You are probably tired of hearing the C-word by now, but the community feeling on Saturday was amazing. Around every turn of the race I encountered a Newmanite proudly volunteering his or her time to help me understand the seemingly complicated path. They were people I had met from joining a choir, attending a Koinania retreat, or just sitting at a big table for lunch.
I can't say I achieved my humble goal time of eight minute miles, but I suppose giving a hug to the water station attendent during a race isn't the best way to stay under time.
After the race we gathered under the park pavilion to hear the results announced by Rachel Boss (a former resident and leader in the SJO organization) and many of us received raffle prizes. No prize or medal came my way but during a charitable event like this, the awards aren't always tangible.
